We have a son born 1975 diagnosed with VATERs. Anomalies included imperforate anus, missing right kidney, radial club left and right hand. Fused right fingers. Also had fistula involving kidney and ureter. Also had Heart defect, Tetrology of Fallot. Most all repaired. Rectal pullthrough and heart fix in '77 and '78. Many ortho hand surguries. As an infant and child, always had what some may have called irritable bowel, but who knows? Initial Heart issues apparently caused some lack of oxygen issues, but he's overcome most of his learning disorders.

He's now been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (in last two years). Just in last 6 months, Dr.s felt his Gall Bladder needed to come out. Didn't seem to fix issue. Does anyone else see Crohn's in their VATERs child?

PS: The good news is, despite learning issues, he made it through High School, went to work as a commercial 18 wheeler trucker. But the Crohn's now threatens his living. His three children are all wonderfully normal. One is a competitive swimmer.

Crohn's is such a mean disease. I don't know of any other vaters with it, but I do know there are some very good drugs given by infusion that allow crohns patients to lead normal lives.

I'm curious to know what he's been doing to manage his bowels all this time.  ie., has he been taking laxatives or doing enemas all his life that may contribute to the Crohns?

Sounds like he's doing great overall!   I'd love to hear your son's story over on the General Board and how you best dealt with his health issues.
